“He’s scum,” she said, in loyal-best-friend fashion.

Had he broken up with me because I’d wrongly accused him of trying to kill me? Or because I’d found him out? His indignation had sure seemed genuine—and I so didn’t want to believe that my boyfriend had tried to kill me—but at the same time, he wasn’t my boyfriend anymore.
